Gary Neville claims West Ham target Lingard should have forced a move
Gary Neville claims Lingard should have forced a move this summer.
Jesse Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Ham last season.
The Manchester United midfielder was directly involved in 14 goals in 16 games for West Ham (Transfermarkt).
On Sunday he marked his return to the London Stadium by scoring the winning goal for Manchester United.
After the game, Gary Neville spoke about the 28-year-old midfielder and even claimed he should have left Manchester over the summer.
Whilst speaking on his podcast, via Sky Sports, Neville stated:
“I still maintain he should’ve left but he will have his moments.”
“I was happy to see how he bounced back after what happened in Europe in midweek.”
“To bounce back and score the winner is a fantastic moment for him.”
“He’s got good character, he’s a very good player and I feel he should be playing 40-45 games a season.”
“He won’t get that at United in terms of 90-minute starts but he’s one of those players that I do feel United will benefit from having.”
“I just thought for Jesse himself, he should’ve left.”
Neville claims Lingard should have forced a move
This comes after a summer in which West Ham wanted to sign Lingard permanently.
According to The Times, West Ham wanted the player but were unwilling to meet the £25m price tag.
That decision not to pay up the money seems to have come to bite them now, though.
Manchester United inflicted West Ham with their first defeat of the season non Sunday, with Lingard dealing the final blow.
It will have been tough to take for the home fans.
When Lingard was brought on off the bench he received a warm welcome from his former fans.
They will all be in agreement with Neville, though, that Lingard should have joined them over the summer.
