Report: Everton think 'amazing' midfielder could form great partnership with Onana, they want to sign him

Everton believe new signing Amadou Onana could form a great midfield partnership with Paris Saint-German’s Idrissa Gueye.

That’s according to The Athletic, who believe that the former Everton man is contemplating a return to Goodison Park.

Onana and Gueye both speak the same languages and hail from Senegal, although Onana is a Belgium international.

There remains growing optimism that Gueye will return to Everton this summer, and he would be a brilliant addition to manager Frank Lampard’s midfield options.

He was described as an ‘amazing’ midfielder during his last stint at Goodison Park, and although he’s now 32 years old, still has plenty to offer for Lampard’s side.

Everton want partnership between Onana and Gueye

The first half of Everton’s desired midfield partnership Amadou Onana received rave reviews of the club before the deal was confirmed.

Left-back Niels Nkounkou was singing the club’s praises before he signed, while Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku told him to join his former club.

Onana can play in a variety of roles in midfield, making him an excellent partner for whichever Everton player Lampard pairs him up with.

Capable of sitting as the more defensive player in a two-man midfield, he’s also very adept at carrying the ball forward and breaking the opposition’s press.

This more adventurous role for Onana would suit Gueye, who since arriving at PSG has been responsible for tackling and pressing opponents before playing simple passes either into his midfield partner or an available defender.

In fact, he’s ranked in the top 10% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for tackling, pressing and passes attempted.

The logic of pairing the two players up makes complete sense, but getting a deal over the line for Gueye is now the key to making it happen.
