Everton signed Amadou Onana from Lille this week, and the Toffees may have to thank Romelu Lukaku for convincing the midfielder to join them this summer.

Frank Lampard’s side, despite the difficult circumstances, have had a decent transfer window. Conor Coady and James Tarkowski are excellent additions, while Dwight McNeil and Ruben Vinagre are exciting signings as well.

However, the pick of the bunch so far is Onana, who joined Everton for £33 million (BBC) just two days ago.

After a really impressive season for Lille, Onana was a wanted man.

A number of clubs across different countries wanted to sign the Belgian midfielder, and it looked almost certain at one point that he was going to join West Ham United.

However, Everton hijacked that deal. They went in, agreed terms with Lille and the player, and brought him over to Goodison Park. The Athletic now claim that Lukaku played a part too.

Onana apparently carried out due diligence with people in Belgium who had previous ties with Everton. Roberto Martinez is the first name that comes to mind, but it was Lukaku who reportedly played the biggest role in convincing his young teammate.

The Inter Milan man was apparently very positive when he spoke about “playing at Goodison, Everton’s fans and the club in general.” The message he sent to Onana was: “If you have an opportunity to go there now — take it.”

That helped convince the young midfielder to sign for Lampard’s side.

TBR View:

Onana really is a fantastic signing.

The 20-year-old was brilliant for Lille last season, and his performances have caught the eye of Belgium boss Martinez as well, who delivered a glowing verdict about the Dakar-born midfielder.

Onana was branded as a player with ‘incredible’ maturity and was even compared to a Premier League legend in Patrick Vieira by the old Everton manager in an interview yesterday.

Everton take on Aston Villa on Saturday, and it will be interesting to see if Lampard will use Onana from the start.
