Report: Eddie Howe now wants to test 23-year-old star and £20m ‘predator’ together in Newcastle training
Newcastle United have returned from their successful mid-season training camp in Saudi Arabia.
A 5-0 victory over Al Hilal earned Howe his first trophy at Newcastle boss, albeit one that probably won’t be added to their honours list.
It was a sign that Newcastle’s incredible form could be carried over to the second-half of the season.
Joelinton and Miguel Almiron both scored braces, and the latter’s performances have been particularly exceptional this season.
Newcastle suddenly find themselves battling to finish in the top four this season, and have a four-point gap over 5th place.
Howe has achieved this start with a number of his key forwards unavailable due to injury.
Allan Saint-Maximin has missed more matches than he’s started in the league this season.
Howe has also been without record signing Alexander Isak for the majority of the campaign.
A report from The Athletic suggests Howe is still looking to experiment with his front line.
It’s understood he wants to see Wilson and Isak play alongside each other in training before starting them together in competitive action.
Wilson and Isak to play together in training
Howe has set his side up in a 4-3-3 formation all season, and it’s proved to be very effective.
The balance of the side has been brilliant, particularly the link-up play between midfield and attack.
However, once fully fit, it would be a shame to have either Isak or Wilson starting on the bench.
The latter has been described as a ‘predator’ by BBC Sport pundit Martin Keown, and could function with the young Swede.
The report suggests Wilson and Isak haven’t work together in training much this season.
The £20m forward will now enjoy some time off after England’s defeat to France at the World Cup.
Isak still isn’t fully fit yet either, although Howe is hopeful he’ll be involved by the time the Premier League restarts.
The 23-year-old has to prove he’s good enough to convince Howe to change his tried and tested tactics.
But defenders would be terrified to see the pair line up together in the future.
