Callum Wilson showed England manager Gareth Southgate just what he is all about with a virtuoso performance for Newcastle today.
The Magpies ran riot against Aston Villa and Wilson scored a couple and helped himself to a few assists as well as he showed just why he is pushing for an England spot.
Wilson had spoke in midweek about how he feels he should be in Qatar. And in front of the onlooking Southgate, it’s hard to make any sort of counter argument against him. Wilson’s finishing and all-round forward play were outstanding.

Watching on from the sidelines for the BBC today was Martin Keown. And the former England man was left in no doubt about whether or not Wilson makes the grade.
“I think Callum Wilson has passed the audition in front of England manager Gareth Southgate to make it on board to go to the World Cup. He is a predator and he’s there to score goals when you need him,” Keown said on BBC comms.
Wilson’s form has been outstanding of late. Since returning from injury, he has picked up the mantle left by new signing Alex Isak. Wilson’s goals today made it three in five since his return.
Newcastle, meanwhile, climbed to third in the Premier League table.
TBR’s View: Callum Wilson shows class for Newcastle v Villa
There can surely be no argument about it now. Callum Wilson simply has to go to the World Cup and he couldn’t have done much more in front of Southgate today.
He brings so much to the forward position that to not include him now would be a travesty. Goals, assists, movement in behind, Wilson really has it all.
Newcastle are on the climb under Eddie Howe but make no mistake, their excellent form has coincided with Wilson’s return to the fold.
