Report: Club now expecting their £45m star striker to leave in January, after he's linked with Arsenal

90 Min claims that PSV now expect their star striker Cody Gakpo to leave in January, after he’s been linked with a move to Arsenal

Mikel Arteta was handed a massive blow during the World Cup break as his own star striker in Gabriel Jesus picked up a knee injury.

The Brazilian is now expected to be sidelined for around three months and as you’d expect, the Gunners have been linked to a host of strikers since.

One name that has been linked with a move to the Emirates even before Jesus’ injury is Cody Gakpo.

A report from the Athletic back in October claimed Arsenal are looking at signing the Dutch forward in January. Of course, rumours have intensified since Jesus’ injury and the Gunners have seemingly been handed a boost as his club now expects him to leave.

PSV expect Gakpo to leave

90 Min reports that PSV are now expecting Gakpo to move away from Eindhoven in the upcoming transfer window.

The outlet notes that their director of football, Marcel Brands, has stated that the 23-year-old would be allowed to leave if a suitable offer arrives.

That offer would have to break PSV’s record fee, which would be more than the €45 million (£38 million) they got for Hirving Lozano back in 2019.

But Arsenal will face competition for the Dutchman’s signature as 90 Min states Manchester United hold a firm interest in signing him.

Gakpo has put up brilliant numbers in Holland this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists in just 23 appearances in all competitions. He’s even outperforming Manchester City star Erling Haaland based on the statistics alone.

The striker will have only increased interest in him after his campaign with the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Louis van Gaal’s men exited the tournament in the quarter-final after a devastating penalty shootout loss to Argentina. But Gakpo managed to bag three goals in Qatar and certainly caught the eye.

The £45 million attacker would be a brilliant addition to Arteta’s squad and would provide much-needed quality depth across the frontline. With Jesus out injured, the Gunners will need to be smart in terms of their January business as they aim to push for their first Premier League title in 20-years.
