Arsenal reportedly want £45m attacker likened to Bellingham whose club will find 'very difficult' to keep next month

Arsenal have been linked with Netherlands star Cody Gakpo for a number of months now.

In October, The Athletic reported that the Gunners are among the clubs still chasing a deal for the 23-year-old.

However, Gakpo’s World Cup efforts could well mean that Arsenal will be in a very congested race for his signature.

The PSV ace has played in all three of his nation’s group games, and has scored in each match.

Dennis Bergkamp, Wesley Sneijder and Johan Neeskens are the only other Dutch players to score in three consecutive World Cup matches.

Gakpo has certainly staked an early claim to be the breakthrough star of Qatar 2022. Maybe even the player of the tournament.

Just a few months ago, the likes of Leeds United and Southampton were reportedly after the exciting winger.

Now, Gakpo will likely be on the radar of the world’s elite.

Rather than battling relegation, he could instantly go into a title or Champions League-challenging squad.

‘He made an excellent choice’

Netherlands teammate Marten de Roon, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, believes it was a great call for Gakpo and PSV to stick rather than twist in summer.

However, he reckons that the Eindhoven side will find it “very difficult” to stay put.

“He’s in great shape. He was already playing well in Holland,” said De Roon.

“In the summer there were many rumours that he would go to a big team. In the end, he stayed.

“Perhaps also to have more chances with the national team. In my opinion, he made an excellent choice.

“He will play a great World Cup, and then it will be very difficult for PSV to keep him.”

As reported by TEAMtalk, Gakpo could apparently have a £45million price tag in the January window.

However, there is likely to be a bidding war as Europe’s best battle for the prodigy’s signature.

Gakpo is an incredibly exciting player who’s showing he has what it takes at the highest level.

And at just 23, he has plenty of years ahead of him.

Cody Gakpo factfile

Back in April, I News wrote a scouting report about Gakpo, with an excerpt below.

‘At first glance, Gakpo feels like a cheat code of a footballer,’ they wrote.

‘He… has been a regular in PSV’s senior side for three years and captains them in the absence of Marco van Ginkel.

‘He can play as a centre-forward or as a winger, and tends to score goals when doing the former and create them when the latter.

‘He’s six foot two and slightly gangly but still elegant with the ball at feet – think Jude Bellingham – and lightning quick.’

Meanwhile, ScoutedFootball wrote: ‘He is a player that can play across the front three, but he has found a home for himself on the left, coming inside onto his preferred right foot: standard stuff for a modern-day wide player.

‘Probably the most striking aspect of his game is his size at his position.

‘At around 6’2”/6’3”, he is a big-bodied wide player – an attribute that lends itself to being a damaging final third player rather than a more mobile wide threat as a ball carrier and dribbler.’

On Twitter, fans have compared Gakpo’s style of play to that of Marcus Rashford, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Richarlison.
