Report: Atalanta confident they'll sign Nuno Tavares from Arsenal
Atalanta are confident of signing Nuno Tavares on loan this summer, but The Times reports that the Serie A side want an option to buy included in the deal.
Tavares has attracted plenty of attention in this window. Reports have suggested that Brighton want the 22-year-old amid doubts over the future of Marc Cucurella.
But it appears that it is Atalanta who lead the race. Fabrizio Romano reported that Arsenal will make a decision in the coming week about whether to let Tavares head to Italy.
The journalist did suggest that the left-back was keen to make the move.
The Times has provided a further update, reporting that Atalanta are confident that they will sign the Portuguese. Meanwhile, they want an option to buy included in the agreement.
Atalanta confident of agreeing deal for Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares
A loan deal does appear to make sense for Tavares. He showed some incredibly promising signs during his first year at the Emirates.
But it became abundantly clear that he is not yet ready for regular game-time in the Premier League. And with Arsenal bringing in Oleksandr Zinchenko, the Gunners can afford to let Tavares leave for those consistent minutes.
It is crucial that Arsenal do not leave the door open for Atalanta to sign him permanently on the cheap. He clearly has a lot of potential. Mikel Arteta suggested that he was ‘exceptional‘ at one stage last season.
If Arsenal feel that he can still make the grade at the Emirates, they should hold out for a significant fee.
But it does appear that he is closing in on a move away ahead of the new season.
