Report: Aston Villa eye John McGinn contract talks amid Liverpool interest

Aston Villa hope to agree a new contract with John McGinn to stave off interest from Liverpool, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (13/2; page 74).

McGinn has consistently been one of the most impressive midfielders in the Premier League since Villa were promoted back in 2019.

He is known for his energy and tenacity. But his quality is also unquestionable.

Matt Targett labelled him ‘unbelievable‘ earlier this season. He is inside the top 20 in the league for progressive passes so far this term, according to FB Ref.

McGinn has been linked with a move away throughout his time at Villa Park. It was reported in the summer that Jurgen Klopp had asked Andy Robertson about his Scotland teammate.

Meanwhile, reports claimed in December that Manchester United also had their eye on the 27-year-old.

The Sunday Mirror (13/2; page 74) reports that both Liverpool and United remain keen on McGinn.

However, Steven Gerrard wants to ensure that he is tied down with the Villans. McGinn’s current contract runs until 2025, but Villa want to extend those terms by two years.

McGinn would also become one of the club’s highest earners.

Liverpool face big battle trying to convince McGinn to leave Aston Villa as Steven Gerrard pushes for new deal

Villa currently sit outside the top-half of the Premier League table. However, they have made progress under Gerrard. And they look to have the potential to really kick on in the years to come.

McGinn would be forgiven for considering his options. He will be 30 by the time his current deal ends, and 32 should he sign an extension.

Turning down Liverpool would be difficult for any player. And McGinn is in that position where he is looking at surely the biggest contract of his career.

But while Villa are moving in the right direction under Gerrard, it would be no surprise if he ultimately opted to commit his future to his current side and ignore the interest from the Reds as well as Manchester United.
