Report: Liverpool target spoke with international teammate over interest as Klopp eyes £50m star

Jurgen Klopp has spoken with Andrew Robertson to gauge a better view of Liverpool target John McGinn, per The Athletic.

Klopp was massively impressed with the Aston Villa midfielder’s performance in the Reds’ 7-2 defeat at Villa Park last October. And the day after, Robertson joined McGinn for international duty and they discussed Liverpool’s interest.

Some of the Anfield squad had also been impressed with how McGinn pulled the strings during the early-season mauling. Now, they could see the Scotland star head to Merseyside as Klopp eyes a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.

Aston Villa will not accept anything less than £45-50m for McGinn as he signed a long-term contract in December. It was the second extension agreed for the 36-cap international in just over a year and ties him down until 2025.

Liverpool may test the Birmingham side’s resolve after Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The Merseysiders had shown an interest in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Florian Neuhaus but have cooled their interest.

Klopp would first have to offload players to afford a deal for McGinn, though. Harry Wilson, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are all available. The Athletic also note that Liverpool are currently playing down plans to sign a midfielder.

TBR’s view: Liverpool should sign Aston Villa gem McGinn

If Liverpool raise the funds, they should be all over a move for Klopp to sign Aston Villa gem McGinn. The midfielder was one of the real stars for Scotland at Euro 2020 and was a key player for Dean Smith in the Premier League.

McGinn only failed to feature once last term and played the full 90 minutes in each of his 37 appearances. Klopp will need a player who is available as much, after calling on Wijnaldum to start 34 of 38 outings.

McGinn also scored three goals and offered six assists last season – more than any of the Reds’ central midfielders. Wijnaldum scored the most with two, while Curtis Jones’ offered the most assists with two in 24 appearances.

The Athletic also quote Klopp as describing McGinn as a ‘super player’, and the fact he discussed his interest with Robertson – who in turn spoke with the Aston Villa star – shows how highly the German admires the Scot.
