Report: Aston Villa believe they could sign £30m international this summer; now set to make approach
Aston Villa are preparing to make a bid for Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Dean Smith is keen to strengthen his attacking options this summer. They have so far been unable to tempt Arsenal into considering an offer for Emile Smith Rowe.
But it was claimed this week that Everton believe that Villa lead the race to sign Dwight McNeil with both clubs keen.
And it now appears that they could be about to battle over another wide target.
According to the Mail, Villa have joined the race to sign Bailey from Leverkusen. The report notes that the Jamaica international could cost up to £30 million, but Villa believe he is attainable.
In fact, it has been suggested that the Villans are preparing an approach for the wide-man, who scored nine goals and contributed eight assists in the league last season.
It comes just a few days after Everton were also linked with a fresh move for Bailey. So it will be interesting to see how the battle plays out.
Signing Leon Bailey would be another huge statement of intent from Aston Villa
Villa seemed to be the early pace-setters in the transfer window. They broke their club record to sign Emi Buendia from Norwich.
Others are now starting to really get going this summer. But Villa would make a major statement if they were soon able to sign Bailey.
The 23-year-old has been outstanding for Leverkusen. He averages a goal or assist every two and a half games in the Bundesliga.
He can also play on either wing, which may prove useful as Smith looks to shape his squad further over the coming weeks.
And of course, his age suggests that he is some way off his peak yet. And that could be a frightening thought given how well he is currently playing.
