Report: Arsenal target Andre Onana decides to stay put
Arsenal have seemingly received a blow in the transfer window, with Sky Italia reporting that Andre Onana has decided to stay at Ajax for the final year of his contract.
According to the report, Onana has been contacted by Inter Milan. It has been claimed that he has received several offers after seeing his suspension reduced.
One of those offers may well have come from Arsenal. It was reported earlier this month that a move to the Emirates was set to be ‘imminent’.
There are doubts over the future of Bernd Leno. And it appeared that Mikel Arteta saw the Cameroonian as a potential replacement for the 29-year-old.
With Onana since seeing his ban reduced, some may have wondered if the way had been paved for a move to be finalised.
However, it appears that all of Onana’s admirers are set for disappointment.
According to Sky Italia, Inter have learned after making contact with the Ajax goalkeeper that he wants to stay put this summer.
It is suggested that he is looking to see out his contract with the Eredivisie side.
Inter remain keen on Onana for the 2022/23 campaign. So it will be interesting to see if Arsenal adopt a similar approach.
Arsenal may be in tricky position amid Onana reports
Signing Onana was always going to be a gamble for Arsenal. He will miss the opening months of next season.
So convincing Leno to stick around only to be replaced as number one midway through the campaign would have been tricky.
But Onana’s new stance probably does Arsenal few favours either.
They now need to decide whether they sign another goalkeeper or stick with Leno for one more year.
Leno did not have the best season. So keeping him may not be Arteta’s first-choice.
They have been linked with Aaron Ramsdale. But if he signs, their interest in Onana will surely end.
