Arsenal linked with £20m-rated star that Alan Shearer claimed has ‘lots of potential’
Arsenal transfer rumours are linking them with Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is someone that earned big praise from Alan Shearer just a few months ago.
According to the Sun, the Gunners are eyeing Ramsdale as a target this summer.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking at the 23-year-old because it’s unclear on what will happen with the club’s current number one goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
The report says that Sheffield United will demand around £20million for their shot-stopper following their relegation from the Premier League.
Ramsdale may have suffered relegation in the 2020/21, but it was an encouraging campaign from him.
He was extremely busy in front of a weak Sheffield United backline throughout the year, so that’s why you can’t read too much into six clean sheets in 42 appearances across all competitions.
The youngster has been drafted into the England squad for Euro 2020 following an injury to Dean Henderson. He’s very much viewed as a star for the future.
Pundit and Premier League legend Alan Shearer even picked out his potential just a few months ago in March.
“He is only 22 but he’s already got a wealth of experience at the top level. He’s got the fifth-most appearances by a keeper under 23 in Premier League history. He’s not had an easy season though and neither have Sheffield United,” Shearer said.
“For me Ramsdale, he’s got lots of potential, he’s strong, he’s got the agility to stop shots from distance and he’s fearless, putting his body on the line from close range.”
Ramsdale belongs in Premier League, but Arsenal a big jump
It would be great to see Ramsdale in front of a defence where he’s much less active than in games at Bramall Lane.
His £20million valuation is certainly appealing.
There are so many examples in the past couple of years of his great reflexes. Additionally, he’s solid in playing out from the back.
But, stepping up at a big club next season is a tall order.
