Report: Arsenal set to miss out on Ruben Neves due to £75m price-tag
Arsenal look set to miss out on Ruben Neves, with The Sun reporting that Wolves’ £75 million asking price has put his admirers off making a move for the midfielder this summer.
Wolves fans probably did not expect to see Neves lining up for Bruno Lage’s side next season. The Portuguese made no secret of his desire to potentially move on in this window.
Reports claimed that Mikel Arteta’s men wanted Neves after making a £35 million bid during the January transfer window.
Of course, the Gunners want to sign another midfielder in this window. And it seems that they are looking at alternative targets after being heavily linked with Youri Tielemans.
However, Neves moving to the Emirates looks highly unlikely. The Sun reports that Wolves are winning the battle to keep Neves. And they have done so by setting a £75 million asking price.
The sides chasing his signature – including Arsenal – value the 25-year-old at around £45 million.
Arsenal to miss out on signing Ruben Neves
Neves has been an outstanding performer throughout his career. And he has been one of Wolves’ best players for a number of years.
It is not a huge surprise that they have set a massive asking price. Losing him would be a significant blow because he is a ‘sensational‘ player.
But it is also probably not a major shock that his admirers also do not want to pay that figure. They may have concerns about whether he is quite in the elite bracket when it comes to midfielders.
He also has two years remaining on his contract at Molineux. So paying £75 million, or anything close to that amount, would probably seem much too steep for several sides. Such a move would have made Neves Arsenal’s most expensive signing.
Neves may be wary of damaging his good relationships at Wolves. So agreeing to a compromise will not be easy.
But perhaps Arsenal may yet attempt to try the longer the club waits to sign another midfielder.
