Report: Arsenal now in talks for £35m PL star 'going right to the top'

Arsenal have entered into negotiations with Ruben Neves as Roma prepare to make a fresh move for Granit Xhaka, according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

The Gunners are continuing their push to sign a new midfielder before the January transfer window closes.

It was reported this week that Roma were planning a new bid for Xhaka. Of course, he came incredibly close to joining the Giallorossi during the summer.

Xhaka continues to divide opinion amongst Arsenal fans. But given their lack of options, Mikel Arteta could not afford to lose another midfielder without at least one new signing.

However, it does appear that the Gunners are making progress on that front. Corriere dello Sport claims that talks between Arsenal and Neves are underway.

The Wolves star has been linked with an Emirates move for several months now. In fact, it was suggested in the summer that Edu was in talks over a potential £35 million deal.

Neves has since gone on to enjoy a brilliant season with Bruno Lage’s side. And with the deadline looming, it is hard to believe that Wolves’ asking price has not increased.

Neves unquestionably an upgrade on Xhaka for Arsenal

Jamie Redknapp has previously backed the Portuguese for the ‘top of the game‘. And plenty of Arsenal fans took to social media to laud Neves’ performance when Wolves beat Brighton this season.

It would be a huge statement for Arsenal to sign Neves in the final days of the window. Certainly, it would be no surprise if many of the Gunners supporters backed the idea of letting Xhaka join Roma should Neves come in.

Xhaka has shone at times over the last 12 months. But he has also received two red cards this term. And they have come against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. So they have taken place in games when the Gunners have needed to be nearly perfect.

Neves meanwhile, is coming into the peak years of his career. And he would unquestionably be an upgrade on Xhaka.
