Report: Top-flight club now want 'phenomenal' Arsenal player
Roma have reignited their interest in signing Granit Xhaka, with Calciomercato reporting that they want the Arsenal midfielder on loan with an option to buy.
It is probably no real surprise to see Xhaka linked with Jose Mourinho’s side. For much of the summer, it appeared inevitable that the Swiss would join the Giallorossi.
In fact, at one stage, it was claimed that the white smoke could be imminent as talks continued. However, Xhaka ultimately stayed at Arsenal. And, much to the surprise of supporters, he signed a new contract.
It has been another interesting season for Xhaka at the Emirates. He has done fairly well when he has played. And he went into this campaign off the back of a brilliant showing at Euro 2020.
However, he spent several weeks on the sidelines with injury. And he has now been sent off on two occasions, coming in for major criticism for challenges made against Manchester City and Liverpool.
Nevertheless, Arsenal do not have the depth right now to let any of their central midfielders go. Of course, one of the players they did lose this month was Ainsley Maitland-Niles, with the academy graduate joining Roma.
And it appears that Mourinho wants Xhaka to make the same move this month. Calciomercato reports that Roma would like to sign the 29-year-old on loan with an option to buy.
Arsenal can only let Granit Xhaka go should new signing come in
Xhaka is never going to be a player who unites the Arsenal fanbase. He has not lived up to expectations during his time in North London. And he has arguably made too many costly mistakes.
Having said that, Arsenal simply cannot allow Xhaka to leave unless a new signing comes in. He is a player Mikel Arteta previously described as ‘phenomenal‘. He clearly has plenty of faith in the former Borussia Monchengladbach man.
And Arsenal do not have the options to let another midfielder go.
It is a move Arsenal fans would usually back. But for this window, the Gunners are surely not in the position to let Xhaka leave.
