Report: Arsenal believed to be keen on 24-year-old France international
Arsenal are believed to hold an interest in signing RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele, according to a report from The Athletic.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has made a fantastic start to life at the Emirates. Few in the Premier League would have known about the Japan international before the last summer window. But he has been a revelation since his arrival.
Nevertheless, Mikel Arteta is seemingly looking to strengthen his options further. Arsenal were recently linked with a fresh move for Brighton starlet Tariq Lamptey.
But they also keeping tabs on other names. And, according to The Athletic, they are believed to hold an interest in Mukiele.
Nordi Mukiele an exciting target for Arsenal, even if RB Leipzig are struggling
The France international has made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga this term. Meanwhile, he featured in all of Leipzig’s Champions League group-stage games, scoring against Paris Saint-Germain.
It has been a disappointing season for Leipzig so far. They find themselves eighth in the top-flight. Jesse Marsch departed last month after a poor tenure.
Mukiele is yet to find his best form as well. He has still managed 32 interceptions in the Bundesliga this season (FB Ref).
The Athletic reports his contract expires at the end of next season. And he has the ability to play in a variety of roles, so there is no reason why Arteta could not end up using him and Tomiyasu in the same team.
He would likely look to offer a little more than Tomiyasu going forward. And he would presumably not cost as much as someone like Lamptey, who Brighton reportedly value at around £50 million.
Whether Arsenal make a move is yet to become clear. But with Mukiele’s contract entering its final 18 months, it would appear likely that there is going to be plenty of speculation surrounding the 24-year-old in the coming months.
