Pundit says Harry Kane leaving has actually helped £22m Tottenham player this season

Pundit Janusz Michallik has suggested that Son Heung-min has benefitted from Harry Kane leaving in the summer as he admitted his concern over where the goals will come from for Tottenham Hotspur over the course of the season.

Michallik was speaking on ESPN after Spurs secured yet another win on Friday night to keep themselves at the top of the Premier League table.

Son Heung-min has certainly enjoyed a stunning return to form this season. The South Korean endured a really poor year last term. And he is already closing in on matching his tally from last year this time around.

Son has stepped into the void left by Harry Kane and proved that he is a world-class forward.

With Tottenham top of the table, there has been a debate over whether Ange Postecoglou’s side are better off without Kane.

Michallik has suggested that he still has his doubts over whether Tottenham have the goals across the pitch to make up for Kane’s departure. However, he does believe that the £22 million man has thrived in his new role.

“I think that’s a massive question for Spurs, because, here we are, we’ll talk about it maybe a little later too, are they better or worse [without] Harry Kane? But think about it. In the past, when one was off, there was one scoring consistently,” he told ESPN.

“Let’s not forget Heung-min Son in his last season. Now, it’s Heung-min Son. He’s benefitted from the fact that Harry Kane’s left. But if he’s not there, then I’d have a major question about Spurs.”

A captain’s contribution

Of course, the debate over Harry Kane is an odd one. There is absolutely no chance that Postecoglou would have said no to having Kane in his squad if he was given the choice.

But the Tottenham players deserve enormous credit for stepping up following his departure. It would have been so much easier had he gone in the opening days of the summer window, rather than on the eve of the new season.

Son has definitely been outstanding. Not only has he been brilliant on the pitch, but he has also proved to be an amazing leader, captaining the side to early success.

Son has formed an amazing partnership with James Maddison. And that has seen Tottenham kick off this new era for the club in some style.
