Phil Jones says Liverpool have an ‘incredible’ player who is ‘so dominant’

Phil Jones has praised a member of the current Liverpool squad who he believes is an “incredible” footballer.

Arne Slot has put together a fantastic team, with a combination of players who were already at the club under Jurgen Klopp and new signings that he has brought in.

Liverpool splashed the cash this past summer by buying Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, among others, strengthening the squad even further as they look to retain the Premier League title.

However, Jones sees one player as someone who can now be considered an all-time Premier League great, not just a top player for this current season.

Phil Jones believes Virgil van Dijk is in the top five Premier League defenders of all time

Over the years, the Premier League has had a plethora of incredible central defenders who have competed at a high level and delivered real consistency.

However, when speaking to Planet Football, Jones revealed that he thinks Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is in the top five the division has ever seen.

“I’m on about my era. I know people will say, ‘Oh what about this player back in 1990,’ well I’m going about my era, so yeah he is top five for me.

Jones didn’t commit to putting Van Dijk in the top three of all time, as he believes John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic sit just ahead of him.

However, the former Manchester United star did make it clear that there is little between those three players and the Liverpool captain.

“You’re talking fine lines here. He’s been an incredible player for Liverpool. I’ve played against him loads of times, he’s so dominant. He’s got such authority. You’re talking minimal, but I put him in the top five.”

Van Dijk has been ever-present in the Liverpool team since he joined the club in 2018 for £75million.

Since then, he’s gone on to dominate the Premier League with his quality performances, proving to be a threat in the air and someone who can read the game well.

That has led to him being widely praised over the years, with Rodrigo Muniz claiming Van Dijk is the “best defender in the world.”

New Liverpool signing Jeremie Frimpong has also been impressed by his teammate, stating that Van Dijk’s the strongest defender he’s seen.
