It’s been a near-perfect start to life at Liverpool for Jeremie Frimpong, and he has admitted he has already been blown away by one of his team-mates.

Frimpong joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer and has made four competitive appearances to date, winning three of them courtesy of last-gasp drama.

Arne Slot’s side beat Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener on Wednesday after Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic 92nd-minute winner.

After the start of his Anfield career was affected by injuries, full-back Frimpong truly announced himself on the scene. However, his focus was on another Reds superstar.

Jeremie Frimpong picks Virgil van Dijk as he builds ultimate Liverpool player

Jeremie Frimpong was put on the spot by TNT Sports this week and tasked with building his ultimate Liverpool player.

He was asked to select just one Reds superstar for several categories, including best right foot, best first touch, best finishing and the best mentality.

Two of his current team-mates made the cut, with Mohamed Salah the winner in the best left foot field.

But it was Virgil van Dijk who muscled his way in to be crowned as the player with the best physicality, seeing off competition from his centre-back sparring partner Ibrahima Konate.

While Frimpong couldn’t help but hesitate slightly over several of his selections, his Van Dijk pick was immediate, albeit after a wry smile and laugh.

It’s fair to say that Frimpong and Van Dijk have already struck up a good understanding and Slot will hope his refreshed Reds side has what it takes to win the Champions League and the Premier League.

Jeremie Frimpong delighted with Liverpool start

Speaking after the rollercoaster win against Atletico at a rocking Anfield, Frimpong admitted the late heroics were exactly why he had wanted to join the club.

“This is why I came to Liverpool,” he said. “Liverpool is a winning team, they know how to win trophies and that’s what I want to do.

“It’s part of football, sometimes you score [in the] last minute. I’ve had a lot of last-minute [goals] in my career so far, obviously with Leverkusen. But the most important thing is that we won.

“I think we deserved to win. We were the better team, played really well.”

Next up for Liverpool are Everton in the Merseyside derby, and at present, it doesn’t look like anyone can stop them steamrolling their way to a second title in a row.
