Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim signed four new first-team players as well as a whole host of youth stars to his squad in the summer transfer window as he aims to turn the club’s fortunes around.
The Portuguese gaffer joined the Red Devils in November last year after United sacked Erik ten Hag, following a run of poor results in the Premier League.
However, he was unable to get a tune out of his players as they eventually slumped to a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League table.
In a bid to turn that around, Ruben Amorim was given full rein to spend around £200million on transfers in the summer on a new-look attacking contingent, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko moving to Old Trafford.
However, it’s the signing of Senne Lammens that went slightly under the radar – and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Amorim was ‘very disappointed’ with the signing of the Belgian, wanting other targets instead.

Peter Schmeichel says Man United boss Ruben Amorim wanted Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martinez
Andre Onana’s struggles last season were well documented, with the Cameroonian producing a catalogue of errors to instil confidence into opponents.
Backup star Altay Bayindir impressed in spells, but even then, he still had his bad moments, and that continued into this season with Bayindir producing errors against Arsenal, Burnley and Brentford in the opening few games in the Premier League.
Lammens was brought in on transfer deadline day to combat that, with the young Belgian having impressed for Royal Antwerp in his homeland at such a young age.
However, whilst he has shown promise so far, Schmeichel believes that Ruben Amorim will have been ‘very disappointed’ that Manchester United didn’t manage to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martinez.
Speaking on BBC’s ‘Monday Night Club’ podcast, Schmeichel said: “I think he was very disappointed that it wasn’t Donnarumma or Emi Martinez who was arriving on that day.
“And it was this young lad that I’m quite sure that he probably didn’t know too much about.
“The rumour is that he signed purely on the data that he’s had the best statistics over the last season for in the best top 10 leagues or something like that, which at the end of the day tells you nothing when it comes to Manchester United goalkeeping.”
Donnarumma has made a solid start to his career at local rivals Manchester City, whilst Martinez continues to act as Aston Villa’s first-choice stopper. However, only time will tell if Lammens turns out to be a good signing or not.

Senne Lammens earned Peter Schmeichel comparisons from Man United fans in Sunderland win
The young Belgian can be right to feel aggrieved by Schmeichel’s comments.
Admittedly a relative unknown during transfer links over the summer, Lammens made his debut against Sunderland in a 2-0 win on Saturday and he was rightly praised for his contribution.
United fans even serenaded their new goalkeeper by paying an ode to club legend Schmeichel during their win over the Black Cats, with Lammens making two strong saves at the end of each half to secure the victory.
It was an assured performance from the young Belgian, and if he can replicate even half of what Schmeichel did in his time at Old Trafford, it will be a worthwhile signing.
