Emi Martinez was subject to transfer speculation all day on transfer deadline day, with the Aston Villa star heavily linked to Manchester United.

Martinez looked Old Trafford-bound after Manchester United rekindled their interest, with the Argentine seemingly open to the move.

However, as deadline day materialised, United made their choice. Ruben Amorim went for Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp instead.

Martinez to United looked perfect, and it’s a decision that’s baffled many. In the midst of it all, the World Cup winner has finally broken his silence.

Martinez is a bit of a character, and amid the drama, the Argentine posted to his Instagram story with a series of emojis, throwing up the peace sign to the camera.

The keeper is on his way to Argentina, it seems. Let’s be honest, it’s probably not Manchester Airport.

The likelihood now is that Martinez will have to mend things with Unai Emery and fight for his place at Villa Park.

Given the trials and tribulations of the transfer window, this may not be an easy task.

Aston Villa may need Emiliano Martinez

That said, Villa need Martinez. They’ve had a torrid start to the season that was epitomised by the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday evening.

Marc Bizot didn’t exactly paint himself in the finest light, so maybe the path back into the Villa XI may be easier than anticipated.

Martinez may not be leaving Villa in this window, but it’s a case of never say never in future – that said, he’s an ageing goalkeeper, so he may have missed his chance to move elsewhere.
