Paul Scholes claims £50m striker would score 25 goals for Arsenal if they signed him

Arsenal went into the summer set out to sign a world-class attacker to lead the line, yet the Gunners are yet to make good on that promise.

Riccardo Calafiori remains the only player Mikel Arteta has signed this summer, though Arsenal are closing in on Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, with two key areas away from the midfield set to be filled before the start of the season.

With Arteta and Gabriel Jesus having big talks this summer, though, there’s every chance that Arsenal might not even sign an attacker, with the Brazilian international looking good in this week’s pre-season win against Bayer Leverkusen.

Yet Premier League legend Scholes has now tipped one top striker to thrive at Arsenal if a move was to happen.

Ivan Toney tipped to score 25 goals for Arsenal

Speaking on the Overlap, Scholes suggested that Ivan Toney would score 25 goals a season for Arsenal, with the former Manchester United maestro noting that signing a centre-forward would help the Gunners in their bid to win the title.

With Arsenal being told to sign Toney on more than one occasion, the £50m-rated attacker could end up in north London late on in the window if the Gunners get the urge to sign a forward, with Scholes backing the England international to succeed in north London.

Scholes said when asked if Arsenal need to sign a striker this summer: “I think signing a centre-forward would help. Signing an out-and-out no. 9 like Man City who would score 20 to 25 goals, then yeah, it would help.

“Ivan Toney is the one who has been mentioned a lot. What is he? 28 years of age. I think in an Arsenal team he could score you 25 goals. I think in a lot of teams he could score 25 goals.”

Arsenal should only turn to Toney as a last-minute solution

At 28-years-old, Toney is at the peak of his powers and set for potentially his best year yet in the Premier League having impressed at the Euros for England after returning to the pitch with Brentford.

Yet for Arsenal, there should still be some reservations on if Toney would be a good signing this summer, with the former Peterborough United man a forward who might not completely suit Arteta’s system in the new season.

As a result, Arsenal should only look to sign Toney as a last-minute decision this summer, with other teams likely to move for the Brentford star before the Gunners consider making their own move.
