Arsenal will sign £25m player in the next couple of days after big worries

It’s very rare that Arsenal get a deal done without a few hiccups. Indeed, the Gunners are never far from a bit of drama.

Last summer, Manchester City tried a late hijack of the Declan Rice deal, while there was even drama surrounding Riccardo Calafiori’s move this summer.

Mikel Merino is reportedly the player Arsenal want to sign next, and, once again, there are conflicting reports around this deal.

Art De Roche claimed earlier this week that Merino isn’t that close to joining Arsenal.

“Yeah I think it makes sense. It doesn’t seem as though it’s as close at the minute as most reports would say,” De Roche said.

“Looking from a stylistic point of view it helps having a midfielder playing in midfield. When Havertz joined last summer, talk was that he would play in that left eight role, but he just didn’t perform there.”

However, according to Steve Kay speaking on KS1 TV, this isn’t the case.

The journalist says he’s seen some outlets playing down this deal, but he says that his information is that Merino will be signing for Arsenal in the next few days.

Mikel Merino to Arsenal will be done shortly

According to Kay, Merino to Arsenal should go through without any issues.

“All I’ve had is people messaging me worried to death about this deal. Saying they have seen people saying in multiple outlets that it’s not as far down the line as it is.

“I don’t know where that is coming from, because my information is that this is on the verge of being done. Personal terms are agreed, a deal of around €30m (£25m).

“The clubs have agreed. Merino doesn’t want to sign for anyone else. He’s not signing a new contract.

“From what I’m hearing it’s the total opposite of what other publications have come out with because as far as I know this will be done in the next couple of days.”

Mikel Merino could play against Wolves

If Arsenal do get Merino signed up in the next couple of days, then he could be in a position to make his debut on the opening day of the season against Wolves.

It would be a short turnaround, but after playing at Euro 2024 and having a week of preparation ahead of him, it’s not unthinkable that Merino will be able to make his debut against Wolves, even if it’s just off the bench.

It sounds as though this deal will be done soon, and once this one is over the line, Arsenal can shift their focus towards improving their attack.
