Paul Merson has criticised one of Aston Villa’s summer signings, suggesting he doesn’t know what he’s doing at the moment.
Aston Villa have endured a torrid start to the season, with no wins on board and no Premier League goals.
Villa were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brentford in midweek, despite the Villans finally getting a goal on board.
Most of Villa’s summer signings haven’t fared tremendously well so far, and Paul Merson was eager to dispense some advice to one of the new recruits.

Paul Merson urges Jadon Sancho to stop playing it safe
Merson has admitted that he doesn’t know what Jadon Sancho is trying to do at present, considering he hasn’t been running at opponents or taking chances.
The former Villa midfielder then urged Sancho to stop playing it safe and actually make things happen on his own rather than look to get rid of the ball.
“I don’t know what Jadon Sancho is doing at the moment though,” Merson wrote on Sportskeeda ahead of Villa’s meeting with Sunderland.
“He’s not running at anybody, not committing people and not taking chances! I’d be shocked if he starts this game.
“Sancho needs to stop playing it safe and has to take risks with the ball at his feet.
“If you lose the ball, no one cares. Try and make things happen instead of just passing it around.”
Evann Guessand was also criticised by Villa fans for his efforts on the night.
However, Harvey Elliott was one of Villa’s best players on the night, scoring on his first start for the club.
Why Aston Villa fans should not worry too much about Jadon Sancho form
Aston Villa signed Sancho on loan from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
Following the international break, Unai Emery handed Sancho his debut on the left flank, but he looked short of match fitness.
Sancho’s last outing prior to the Brentford game was a superb goalscoring cameo for Chelsea against Real Betis in the Europa Conference League.
The quality is there, and now it’s just a matter of Sancho getting up to speed, which should happen naturally over the coming weeks.
Likewise, Emery is a world-class manager, and if anyone can get the best out of his players, it’s him.
