Aston Villa full-back Lucas Digne has been left impressed by one of the club’s summer signings despite the claret-and-blue side’s dismal start to the season.

The Villans sit 19th in the Premier League table after picking up just one point from their opening four league games, and they’re yet to score in the competition.

And though Aston Villa did get off the mark in the Carabao Cup meeting with Brentford, they could only draw in normal time before being knocked out on penalties.

Harvey Elliott, who joined Villa from Liverpool in the summer, was the goalscorer for Unai Emery’s side, and he took to social media after the match with a message for the fans.

Elliott took to Instagram to say he was glad to have got off the mark for Villa, but at the same time he was disappointed that they were knocked out.

“Go again Sunday,” said Elliott, as he looked ahead to the weekend’s trip to newly-promoted Sunderland.

Plenty of Elliott’s peers responded in the comments, with Digne posting three fire emojis.

Meanwhile, Matty Cash posted an upward arrow captioned ‘top’, while Evann Guessand posted three smiley-heart emojis and Tyler Morton wrote “what a guy”.

Harvey Elliott the best of a bad bunch

There was quite a bit of variation between the Villa players in terms of their respective displays against Brentford.

For instance, Evann Guessand was criticised by Villa fans for his efforts, while Jadon Sancho’s Villa debut did not quite go to plan.

However, Elliott was one of Villa’s best players on the night, scoring on his first start for the club and also creating the first chance of the game.

The former Liverpool man was also able to drive Villa forward on numerous occasions, which bodes well for the future.

Villa may not have started well this season, but with the likes of Elliott in the squad, there’s certainly scope to kick on and do well in the coming weeks and months.
