Paul Merson has named Tottenham Hotspur’s acquisition of Yves Bissouma as the ‘signing of the summer in the Premier League so far’ ahead of Darwin Nunez to Liverpool and Erling Haaland to Manchester City.

Spurs have not messed around in this window. After the signings of Ivan Persisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers, the North Londoners splashed £25 million to sign Bissouma from Brighton (BBC).

The Mali international has been linked with a move to multiple top-six clubs over the last 18 months. He has been brilliant for the Seagulls in the Premier League, and Spurs really have pulled off an incredible signing.

Merson ranked the five best signings of the summer so far in his column on Sportskeeda, and he feels Bissouma to Spurs even trumps Manchester City signing Haaland.

The pundit wrote: “This is an unbelievable coup for Spurs as Yves Bissouma could have played for any of the other top-six sides in the Premier League. He’s better than Scott McTominay and Fred, I have no idea why Manchester United didn’t go in for him!

“He runs the show, affects football matches right from the get-go and is an all-round midfielder with quite a bit of Premier League experience under his belt.

“No disrespect to Spurs, but why didn’t some of the other teams look at him and consider making a move for him? I look at Liverpool’s midfield and feel he could play for them, especially if someone like Fabinho we’re to get injured.

“£25 million in this day and age – it’s nothing. Spurs have nabbed an absolute bargain with Bissouma and he, in my opinion, has been the signing of the summer in the Premier League so far.”

On paper, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in midfield is a fantastic pairing. They’re both defensively excellent and their passing isn’t too bad either.

However, neither player is really good at carrying the ball from Tottenham’s own half into the final third. That’s the reason why Spurs were so keen on a new midfielder, and Bissouma checks that box.

The 25-year-old can easily do Hojbjerg and Bentancur’s job when Spurs are without possession, but when he has the ball, he is more than capable of progressing forward all on his own.

Only time will tell if Bissouma is a better signing than Haaland or Nunez, but it has to be said he makes Spurs a much better side than they were last season.
