Merson said on Sky Sports, as transcribed by HITC Sport: “Would you go and pay £60 or £70 million for him? Because he was a centre-forward who couldn’t hit a barn door, without being horrible.

“They put him back into midfield, Eddie Howe has seen it with his vision, and he’s been a revelation. He has. But if you’re a manager of another team, he’s not a natural midfield player. So, would you pay £60 million?”

My View: Joelinton should sign a new Newcastle contract

In my opinion, Joelinton and Newcastle United should work out a deal and continue their relationship.

I think that the 27-year-old should stay at Newcastle. He has flourished at the club under manager Eddie Howe, who has transformed him by playing in midfield after his struggles as a striker under Steve Bruce.

Joelinton is 27 now and is at the top of his game. Newcastle should capitalise on that and do their utmost to do a deal that would suit both parties.

The Brazil international has made 152 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. Joelinton has scored 18 goals and given seven assists in those games.
