Papiss Cisse says he was absolutely gutted when Newcastle sold £7m player

Newcastle face Chelsea at the weekend, and that means that there’s bound to be plenty of reminiscing on arguably the best Premier League goal ever.

Back in 2012, Papiss Cisse scored an absolute wonderstrike at Stamford Bridge from an almost impossible position, striking a volley that seemed to swerve in a way that completely defied the law of physics.

12 years on, Cisse is still mentioned whenever this fixture is played, and ahead of this game, the striker has appeared on the Everything is Black and White Podcast to discuss his Newcastle career.

Of course, you can’t speak about Cisse without mentioning his fellow Senegalese strike partner, Demba Ba.

Ba and Cisse were absolutely lethal together for Newcastle, and speaking on this podcast, Cisse has now admitted that he was absolutely gutted when Ba left for Chelsea in a £7m deal in 2013.

Cisse says that he found it hard to accept that Ba was leaving Newcastle.

However, the striker said that he didn’t feel any ill will towards his partner, claiming that he knew why he chose to join Chelsea at that time.

“And with them, I mean, with Demba, he went to Chelsea, didn’t he? were you disappointed to see him leave because that was the end of that little partnership?” Cisse was asked.

“Yes, honestly, honestly. When he left, it was a little bit hard for me because he helped me a lot, you know, even for speaking tradition, you know, to see him around me. He made me feel good,” Cisse said.

“But, you know, it’s Chelsea. It’s Chelsea. He goes to Chelsea and I only have to wish him all the best because it’s his big team and it’s his choice, you know, I wish him big success there in Chelsea.”

How did Demba Ba do at Chelsea?

Ba got his dream move to Chelsea in 2013, but that was the beginning of the end for Ba at the top level.

Indeed, the striker’s form tailed off during his time at Stamford Bridge, and the stats show it.

Ba would spend more time on the bench at Chelsea as the likes of Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o were preferred at the time.

Ba did have a one famous moment at Chelsea though.

Ba famously cost Liverpool the Premier League title in 2014 with his goal at Anfield after Steven Gerrard’s slip, and that moment wrote him into Chelsea folklore forevermore.

Cisse ultimately left Newcastle in 2016, going on to score plenty of goals in China and Turkey.

Cisse was actually linked with a Newcastle return in 2019, but nothing came of that, and after a short spell with Macclesfield in 2023, Cisse still isn’t officially retired from football.
