Ossie Ardiles has told Tottenham’s official website that he was so happy when Spurs signed Cristian Romero, and said that the centre-back is absolutely brilliant.

Romero has been an absolute revelation in the Premier League this season. But perhaps he should not have been given the campaign he enjoyed before his arrival.

The Argentinian was named Serie A’s best defender after his loan spell with Atalanta. And he then went on to help Argentina win the Copa America in the summer.

Nevertheless, Romero was not a household name before his move to Tottenham. But he has gone on to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League this term. Jamie Carragher suggested that he has been the signing of the season.

Spurs are going to make his move permanent. And Ardiles will be amongst the many delighted to see him stay.

The Tottenham legend was asked about Romero’s performances this season. And he suggested that he has been so pleased with how well he has done.

“He’s absolutely brilliant,” he told Tottenham’s official website. “I was incredibly happy when he arrived at the Club, because his CV was wonderful. I didn’t see him play in Italy a lot. But he was voted best defender in Serie A, and so on.

“I have, however, seen him play a lot for Argentina and in a very, very good team right now, he’s one of the most important players. Certainly, number one in defence. I was happy when he arrived. I knew it would take a little time to adapt, but he has adapted quickly. He’s also from my hometown in Argentina, Cordoba.”

Tottenham signing Romero really looks to have the potential to be a game-changing signing. Some at Spurs believe that he has the potential to be a transformative addition.

Tottenham have improved considerably. Antonio Conte can take a lot of credit for that. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min can, too. But that conversation must also include Romero.

He is one of the first names on the team sheet. And his reward could well now be a place in next year’s Champions League.
