Yoane Wissa’s injury has cost Newcastle United millions as PSR hit revealed

TBR Football’s financial expert Adam Williams has revealed how much money Newcastle United have wasted on Yoane Wissa so far, with the Congolese striker recovering from an injury and thus still yet to feature for the club.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe had to scramble to sign a striker in the summer transfer window following the Magpies’ sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

Newcastle had Isak and Callum Wilson in their ranks last season, where the duo spent three years together as the de-facto strike force at St. James’ Park, notching a combined 91 goals between them since Isak joined the club in the summer of 2022.

That came to an end over the off-season, though. Howe waved goodbye to Wilson as he joined West Ham United on a free transfer, while Isak’s British transfer record move to Liverpool meant two strikers needed to be brought in.

Nick Woltemade was one of those, and the 6ft 6in German talisman has made a fine start to life in the Premier League with three goals in three home games. However, Yoane Wissa’s £55million move to Newcastle from Brentford has been ill-fated so far.

Yoane Wissa’s Newcastle United injury cost after £55m summer transfer

TBR Football’s financial expert Adam Williams has shed light on how much the Magpies have spent on Wissa via PSR whilst the Congo international has been injured.

Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford on transfer deadline day for £55million, despite having just one year left on his contract in West London, which appeared to be a lot of money for the 29-year-old.

There is no doubting his quality in the Premier League, having scored 19 goals in the top-flight for the Bees under now-Tottenham boss Thomas Frank last season, though he has been unable to show that as of yet.

And Williams has calculated how much Newcastle will have spent on the attacker so far, with a return from injury still not in close sight. Williams said: “Wissa had one year remaining on his deal at Brentford, but they did have the option to extend his contract.

“So, for all intents and purposes, the club valued him as though he had two years left. Either way, Newcastle probably ended up paying over the odds for him.

“Because cold, hard cash isn’t an issue for Newcastle under PIF, it’s the impact that the transfer will have on their PSR position that we need to look at, as well as UEFA’s equivalent financial rules.

“He signed a four-year deal, so that’s the length over which Newcastle amortise his £50m transfer fee, plus the £5m in add-ons, depending on how achievable they are. Amortisation is how clubs account for transfers over a set period for the purposes of the bottom line in the end-of-year financial results, which is how the Premier League assesses PSR compliance.

“So in Wissa’s case, you divide £55m by four years to get £13.75m. That’s the PSR impact annually. On top of that, agents’ fees are amortised, so you can probably add at least another £1m to that figure. You need to add another four per cent for the Premier League’s transfer levy too, which goes towards pension contributions. With that, you’re nearly at £15.5m.

“You’ve also got to take the player’s wages into account. I’ve not seen any reliable reporting on his salary – and as a side note, you can’t trust the sources which appear in the top three or four results on Google for this; they’re always miles out. But let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that he’s on £150,000 per week before bonuses, image rights and so on. That’s £7.8m, on top of £15.5m, making £23.3m.

“If we say he has missed about a fifth of the season for Newcastle, then you say that the PSR impact of his injuries have been just under £5m.

“It’s quite a crude calculation, but it gives you a sense of the impact of injuries financially, with PSR, in this case. Newcastle have plenty of PSR headroom at the moment anyway, so it’s an academic point, but an interesting one all the same.”

45-goal Premier League star Wissa refused to play for Brentford whilst there was speculation over his future, and despite featuring for Congo in the international break in September, he pulled up with an injury which has impacted his Magpies career under Eddie Howe.

Yoane Wissa injury update as Newcastle sweat over missed appearances

Wissa is yet to have trained with the first-team squad or play any club football this season, putting more impetus on Nick Woltemade to supply the goods.

It’s thought that Wissa will be out for another month, meaning that he will miss vital clashes in the league against Brighton, Fulham and West Ham, whilst a Champions League tie against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica will also pass him by.

Therefore, he could earn minutes against Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, or his return could incidentally come at former side Brentford prior to November’s international break.

There were concerns over a potential ACL injury but they have been disregarded. A wait after the November international break would see him make his home debut against title challengers Manchester City.
