Newcastle United have officially confirmed the British transfer record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

The Swede has joined Liverpool in a staggering £125 million deal on deadline day after months of constant speculation.

Isak had reportedly refused his first team duties at St James’ Park after the Reds’ initial offer of £110m was swiftly rejected by Newcastle at the beginning of August.

However, after a meeting between Isak and PIF resulted in the player reaffirming his demands to leave the Magpies before the deadline, a deal was struck with Liverpool in the early hours of Monday morning.

Newcastle issue brief statement on Alexander Isak sale

At 9:31pm on deadline day, exactly one minute after the Premier League’s deadline for deal sheets to be completed, Newcastle announced that Isak had completed his move to Anfield.

The statement read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.”

“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”

After weeks of silence, Isak released a bombshell public statement during the PFA Player of the Year awards wherein he openly admitted his desire to leave Newcastle.

The Magpies were adamant on their not-for-sale stance for their leading goalscorer, but tensions had boiled over in the North East following Isak’s public outburst.

TBR Football revealed that the Newcastle players are glad Isak has left after his own admission left the side without an out-and-out striker for the first three matches of the season.

And once the Magpies signed Nick Woltemade for £68.4m, the path was clear for Isak to get his long-awaited move to Merseyside and for Newcastle to draw a line in the sand over the summer’s most talked-about saga.

Newcastle United confirm the signing of Yoanne Wissa

Newcastle closed the book on two transfer sagas on deadline day as the Magpies agreed a £55m deal for Yoanne Wissa after he, like Isak, expressed his desire to move clubs this summer.

With Wissa and Woltemade through the door at St James’ Park, Newcastle now believe they have the appropriate firepower to fill the void left by Isak.

It is a shame to see the player who scored the goal that delivered Newcastle their first trophy in 70 years leave, having burned all his bridges in the North East.

Nevertheless, the supporters will undoubtedly be relieved that Isak will no longer cast a dark cloud over St James’ Park, and Eddie Howe can now fully prepare for the club’s return to the Champions League after the international break.
