Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle United are growing in confidence that they may be able to sign James Maddison in the January transfer window.
With England out of the World Cup, many fans are now turning their attention back to the Premier League season. And there is plenty for Newcastle supporters to be excited about.

The Magpies sit in the top-four in the Premier League. And they are playing some of the best football in the division. They have only lost once in the league this season.
Newcastle growing in confidence over Maddison
There is a fantastic opportunity for Eddie Howe’s side to achieve something special this term – well ahead of schedule. And with that, January could be a crucial month.

Reports from The Northern Echo claimed that Maddison was Newcastle’s top target for next month. And it seems that there is optimism that a deal can be agreed, with Jones suggesting that Newcastle think that they could land the attacking midfielder.
“I’d probably go as far at this point as saying James Maddison is their top target for the January transfer window in this position,” he told Give Me Sport.
“There is, from what I can gather, a growing belief that they can get it done and convince him that this is the right way to go.”
It is almost easy to forget how good Maddison had been in the opening months of the season. Of course, he ended up playing no part in England’s run to the quarter-final of the World Cup.
But he forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad with seven goals and four assists. He had been absolutely vital to Leicester. And losing him would be huge for Brendan Rodgers’ men in January.
As Give Me Sport notes, the Foxes have set an asking price of around £60 million for Maddison. So he will certainly not come cheap.
But given the impact he has had this season, he could be an inspired signing for Newcastle. He is a ‘sensational‘ talent approaching the peak of his powers.
And bringing him to Tyneside would have the potential to be a further game-changer for the Magpies.
