Newcastle fans react as club eye contract talks with Everton target Sean Longstaff
A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter after the Sunday Mirror suggested that the Magpies plan to open contract talks with Everton target Sean Longstaff.
Longstaff remains at St James’ Park following the closure of the summer transfer window.
It had been reported that initial talks with Everton had been held. Rafa Benitez, of course, knows the 23-year-old from his time on Tyneside.
He stayed put however. And with his deal up next summer, Newcastle now face a key decision on his future.
It appears that they want to tie him down. The Sunday Mirror reported that Newcastle are expected to reopen talks with Longstaff over a new deal.
It does seem to have disappointed some of the Newcastle fans on social media that Longstaff could now be handed a new contract.
He has lost his way somewhat since being valued at £50 million when Manchester United were linked with a move in 2019 (Telegraph). He only started 15 league games last term.
His value is now £10 million, reports claim. And while that will be somewhat down to his contract situation, there is no doubt that his stock has fallen in the last two years.
And some are not convinced that he will vindicate the club’s decision should he end up signing fresh terms in the coming months.
‘What is the point?’: Newcastle fans react as Everton target Sean Longstaff looks set for contract talks
For others however, a departure still looks to be on the cards. Some certainly think Everton is a likely destination. And they actually think he would benefit from moving on. Benitez had a good relationship with the youngster.
With that in mind, here is how some of the Newcastle fans have reacted to the reports…
He clearly doesn’t get on with Bruce. I wouldn’t be shocked if Sean joins Everton in January

Over rated cause he’s a local lad , he thought everyone was coming for him, no offers so has to talk to renew

May as well hope he can find his form again. No point selling him for peanuts because we all know Ashley won’t replace him

If he wants to do anything in football he should leave at the end of the season
