Report: Everton hold initial talks over Sean Longstaff move
Everton appear to have stepped up their interest in Sean Longstaff with The Athletic reporting that initial talks over a move for the Newcastle United midfielder have been held.
The Toffees have been quiet so far this summer. Rafa Benitez has overseen the arrival of a handful of players. But the supporters await a marquee addition.
Longstaff has struggled to kick on on Tyneside after bursting onto the scene. The 23-year-old only made 15 Premier League starts last season. He also failed to score a single goal.
But Benitez looks to be an admirer. The Athletic has noted that the pair have kept in touch since the Spaniard’s spell at St James’ Park.
And their report suggests that initial talks over a move have taken place.
It remains to be seen if there is a deal to be done. But the Magpies do appear to be closing in on Joe Willock. So perhaps they may be open to letting Longstaff leave.
Everton move for Sean Longstaff could be inspired, but fans will have their doubts
If Benitez can get the best out of Longstaff once again, a move to Goodison Park could prove to be a fantastic piece of business.
He has not had the best time at Newcastle. So his stock is not as high as it would have been a couple of years ago.
But it was only in 2019 that Manchester United were sniffing around. On that occasion, the Magpies valued him at £50 million (Telegraph).
So he clearly has a lot of potential. And Benitez may be optimistic that he is the man to unlock it.
