Everton may have reason to monitor goings-on at Newcastle United over the coming months, with the Sunday Mirror (5/9; page 78) reporting that the Magpies are planning to reopen contract talks with Sean Longstaff.

For some of the summer, it appeared that Longstaff may be set for a reunion with Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

The Athletic even reported that initial talks with the Toffees had been held. And it was suggested after the window that a swap deal idea involving Tom Davies had been floated.

The Mirror also suggests that Benitez considered a swap with Davies. And it seems that Everton may soon learn whether there will be scope to make a fresh move in January or not.

The report suggests that Newcastle are expected to try and discuss a new deal for Longstaff.

His current terms expire next summer. So if they are unsuccessful, they could reportedly look to sell in the winter. Longstaff is reportedly valued at £10 million.

Sean Longstaff must be wary of signing new Newcastle contract with Everton keen

Longstaff has shown some promising signs in the early stages of this season. He was impressive in the draw with Southampton before the break.

But that spell comes after an underwhelming time for the Magpies. And with that in mind, he must be tempted to consider his options.

As things stand, it is difficult to argue that Newcastle are making progress. Steve Bruce endured a very quiet summer.

Everton meanwhile, look to be moving forward under Benitez. And he is a manager Longstaff knows extremely well.

Leaving Newcastle would surely be incredibly difficult for the 23-year-old. But signing a new deal if Everton are keen looks to be a real gamble right now.
