Newcastle could now move to sign ‘dominant’ £52m player they’ve tracked since last season

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio.

That’s according to Maisfutebol, with the outlet claiming the Magpies have been tracking the defender since last season.

Eddie Howe could be in the market for a new centre-back in January after Sven Botman picked up a knee injury back in September.

Of course, Newcastle are also searching for an extra man in midfield following summer signing Sandro Tonali’s ban.

But should the Magpies snap up a midfielder at a reasonable price, they could look to bolster their options in defence.

And a fresh report claims they are keeping tabs on Portugal defender Goncalo Inacio.

Newcastle have been tracking Inacio

Maisfutebol claims Newcastle have been ‘studying’ a possible move for Inacio behind the scenes.

It’s noted that Howe’s men have been monitoring his progress since last season, with their ‘assessment’ gaining more traction in recent weeks.

Yet, if Newcastle wish to sign the defender in January, they will have to meet his £52 million release clause.

Inacio has been heavily linked with a move to England over the past few months, with Liverpool and Tottenham said to be keen.

The 22-year-old has made a real name for himself in Portugal over the past couple of years after some exceptional displays for Sporting.

Lauded as a ‘dominant’ defender, Inacio has already been capped four times for Portugal, scoring two times in the process.

There’s no doubt that Newcastle need reinforcements at centre-back as they currently lack quality depth in the position.

But it would be a surprise to see them splash £52 million on Inacio in January.

It’s no secret Howe’s men will be in the market for a new midfielder following Tonali’s ban and due to FFP, they may not be able to spend big in the winter transfer window.
