Newcastle could make January move for 23-year-old who has captained PL rival this season

Newcastle United remain admirers of Conor Gallagher as the Magpies consider potentially making a move for a midfielder in the January transfer window.

Next month could be extremely difficult for Eddie Howe to negotiate. Newcastle have lost so many players to injury already in the opening months of the season, with the likes of Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Harvey Barnes amongst those who have been sidelined for some time.

The Magpies will also be without Sandro Tonali until next season as he serves a ban. And with that, another midfielder could potentially be on the wishlist for January.

Newcastle are interested in Kalvin Phillips. But The Athletic reports that they are also continuing to monitor Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher is approaching the final 18 months of his contract at Chelsea (Transfermarkt). So it could potentially be a crucial window for the midfielder and the Blues. If he is not going to sign a new contract, his value is only going to drop from here.

A real statement from the Magpies

The Athletic does note that Gallagher may be priced out of a move next month, with Tottenham also keen. Chelsea would have apparently accepted £50 million for the England international in the summer.

The good news for Newcastle is that The Athletic’s report adds that the club may be open to bringing forward plans for the summer. So there may perhaps be scope for spending money on their targets next month.

And signing Gallagher would be a real statement for the Magpies, if a deal is at all possible. He does not turn 24 until February, but has already made well over 100 appearances in the Premier League. He has also captained Chelsea on a number of occasions this season.

So it would be a really exciting piece of business if Newcastle could manage to agree a deal with Chelsea.
