Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are interested in signing Jobe Bellingham from Michael Beale’s Sunderland.

That is according to The Daily Mail, which has reported the extent to which Newcastle went to convincing Bellingham to move to St. James’ Park before he decided to join Sunderland from Birmingham City.

So, what has been reported about Newcastle United, Sunderland and Jobe Bellingham? Let’s take a look.

Newcastle United back in for Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham

Well, according to The Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in signing Jobe Bellingham from rivals Sunderland and have been following him this season.

The report has claimed that Newcastle wanted to sign Bellingham from Birmingham City in the summer of 2023 before he made the switch to Sunderland for £1.5 million.

Newcastle spoke to the family of the 18-year-old attacking midfielder and let them know that he would be part of the youth set-up initially.

Bellingham turned down Newcastle’s advances. The teenager, who is the younger brother of Real Madrid and England international midfielder Jude Bellingham, wanted to play first-team football and chose Sunderland instead.

The England Under-19 international midfielder has made 24 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship for Sunderland so far this season.

Bellingham has scored four goals and given one assist in those games. Former Sunderland chairman and striker Niall Quinn has described him as a “phenomenal” player who “looks so comfortable playing the game, at such a young age”

My View: Newcastle United unlikely to be able to sign Jobe Bellingham

In my view, Newcastle United are unlikely to be able to sign Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland in the January transfer window or in the summer of 2024.

I do not think that Sunderland will sell one of their best young players to rivals Newcastle.

Of course, we know that in football money talks, but with clubs such as Real Madrid interested and Tottenham Hotspur in the midfielder, Sunderland are unlikely to entertain the idea of doing business with Newcastle.

Bellingham himself may not be too keen on moving to Newcastle straight after turning out for Sunderland.
