Mo Salah claimed £75m Liverpool star will win them Champions League and Premier League this season

Liverpool will target more trophies this season, and Mohamed Salah is confident they have a player good enough to inspire them to glory.

Despite losing their last two matches, Arne Slot’s new-look Reds are expected to put up a fight on four different fronts, with the Premier League and Champions League their priorities.

They cantered to the top-flight title last time out and look on track to keep hold of their crown, despite losing late on against Crystal Palace. Arsenal, expected to be their closest challengers, have also made a formidable start to the campaign.

Slot may have splashed the cash during the summer, bringing in the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, but Salah has predicted that a long-time servant will make the difference in the search for silverware.

Mohamed Salah says Virgil van Dijk will lead Liverpool to trophies

Virgil van Dijk has been a colossus since arriving at Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, and he has more than repaid his £75million price tag.

A natural leader, the towering Dutchman succeeded Jordan Henderson as Liverpool captain in July 2023, and Salah believes he will again inspire them to success in the biggest competitions.

On TikTok, DAZN Football asked several Reds players to draw a random team-mate out of a hat and guess what they would go on to achieve this season.

Mohamed Salah pulled out Van Dijk before saying: “Our captain. He will probably lead us to the Champions League and Premier League again.”

Since being appointed skipper, Van Dijk has won the league title once and the Carabao Cup, and he will be determined to add more to his glittering trophy cabinet this season.

Even in light of their recent two defeats, Liverpool should never be counted out, especially once Slot is able to find a better balance for his team after shaking up his frontline.

Peter Crouch praises Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk

Salah and Van Dijk will, of course, go down in history as two of the finest players to have ever pulled on the hallowed Liverpool jersey, and Peter Crouch agrees with the sentiment.

Back in April, Crouch told TNT Sports: “Van Dijk’s been instrumental and Mo Salah, especially this season, is breaking every record. He’s cemented his place as a true legend at Liverpool. It’s a real statement for Liverpool to keep Salah.

“They would have had to fork out quite a bit, I imagine, but it was a great investment. He’s fit as a fiddle, he looks sharp still. He’s definitely got two more years in him.”

Crouch also insisted Salah is deservedly among the best goalscorers in the Reds’ rich annals, placing him alongside the legendary Ian Rush.

He then turned his attention to Van Dijk, claiming he could be Liverpool’s greatest ever centre-back.

“[Mark] Lawrenson and [Alan] Hansen were before my time, [Jamie] Carragher is a club legend, and Sami Hyypia are the ones I played with,” he added. “From what I’ve seen, Van Dijk would be No 1.”
