Mikel Merino can’t believe how much passion one new Arsenal signing is already showing

Mikel Merino is impressed with the amount of passion one of Mikel Arteta’s summer signings is showing at Arsenal, despite only being at the club for a short amount of time.

Arsenal left it late against Newcastle United, but eventually ran out 2-1 winners at St James’ Park on Sunday evening.

It was Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes who were the heroes on the night, with 83rd and 90+6 minute goals securing all three points.

Merino got the equaliser, once again coming off the bench and providing the goods for Mikel Arteta. That said – he directed praise towards Eberechi Eze on the night.

Mikel Merino loves Eberechi Eze’s passion for Arsenal

Eberechi Eze took to Instagram after Arsenal’s win over Newcastle to share a message with Gunners supporters: “Tables turn. For your glory God. Arsenal.”

Spanish teammate Merino responded in the comments, writing: “That’s passion right there.”

Eze officially joined Arsenal on 23rd August 2025, meaning the England international has been at the club for just 37 days.

The passion he has already shown is a promising sign for Arsenal fans. Players who genuinely care often reflect that commitment in their performances on the pitch.

Eberechi Eze was a boyhood Gunners fan

The deep-rooted passion obviously comes from the fact that Eze is an Arsenal supporter.

“I thought about coming back from the moment I understood other clubs and what it meant to become a pro,” he revealed to Ian Wright after signing for Arsenal to the club’s media. “I’ve always thought: ‘Arsenal is where it’s at, that’s what I want to achieve, what I want to get to.’

“I’ve been on trial for four years, if I’m being honest. Every time I came to Arsenal, I looked at the seat that I used to sit on when I used to come to games with my brothers, and I’ve said every single time: ‘this is it – it’s time, this is an opportunity.’ I’m not going to say I knew it was going to happen, but that’s the feeling.

“As a player, I have a level of belief in myself. I’ve been playing how I’ve been playing, I’ve been developing this and that, and I had the heart that if it’s meant to be, it will happen, and I believe it will. But if it doesn’t, I’m at peace because I know I’m giving everything. So for it to happen now and to be in this position, there is a bit more energy inside the tank.”

Eze is going to be a sensational signing for Arsenal for many, many years to come.
