Mikel Arteta impressed by Arsenal youngster Marquinhos' 'exceptional' physicality
The Gunners signed the 19-year-old from Sao Paulo in a deal worth £3 million (Goal) this summer. He was given an opportunity in pre-season, but he’s yet to feature for the first team in the Premier League this term.
Marquinhos has, however, played for the Arsenal U21s in the Premier League 2. He scored a good goal and picked up a ‘breathtaking‘ assist on his debut against Manchester United earlier this month. He then scored a brace against West Ham in the very next game.
The young Brazilian is certainly impressing everyone at Arsenal, including first-team boss Arteta.
Mikel Arteta impressed by Marquinhos’ ‘exceptional’ physicality
When Arsenal signed Marquinhos this summer, many felt he would be loaned out. However, following two really impressive performances for the U21s, it looks like Arteta has changed his mind.
In his press conference yesterday, the Gunners boss raved about the youngster’s physicality.
Arteta said, as per Arsenal.com: “I’m very happy with him. He has adapted very well and he’s a really likeable figure in the dressing room and around Colney.
“His language is not great yet but I think his physicality has been pretty exceptional, for someone who has come from Brazil and has a different way to train and play, but he’s done it.
“I think he’s got the qualities for how we want to play. We will keep him here for another few months and make sure that he establishes himself at the club and in the team. Afterwards, we’ll see what the best movement is for his career.”
Marquinhos was left out of Arsenal’s squad for their games against Crystal Palace and Leicester City. That was absolutely the right call, but we could see him make his debut very soon
The youngster has been fantastic for the U21s so far. He has scored three goals and has picked up an assist in just two starts, which is a sensational return. An opportunity at senior level is surely right around the corner now.
Nicolas Pepe is reportedly very close to joining Nice on loan, and France Bleu have claimed that the deal could even be completed this weekend.
That suggests that Pepe’s place on the bench would be up for grabs if Arsenal don’t sign a replacement, and Marquinhos – a left-footed right-winger like the Ivorian – could well be the man to replace him in the squad.
