Marquinhos stars for Arsenal U21s with two goals vs West Ham
The Arsenal U21s took on their West Ham United counterparts in a London derby last night, and for the second week running, young Marquinhos was the star of the show.
The Gunners signed the talented Brazilian teenager from Sao Paulo in a deal worth £3 million (Goal) this summer. He has been viewed as one for the future, but if he keeps performing as he has for the youth team, Mikel Arteta may change his mind.
Marquinhos scores twice for Arsenal U21s vs West Ham in 3-2 win
Arsenal began their Premier League 2 campaign with a win over Manchester United’s U21s last week. Marquinhos scored a goal and picked up a ‘breathtaking’ assist then, and he has done something even better now.
The 19-year-old, just like last week, started on the right flank for the Arsenal U21s and was really impressive. He did give away the ball a few times and not everything he tried worked out, but his quality was there for everyone to see.
Just over a minute after Arsenal went 1-0 down, Marquinhos popped up inside the box and headed home the equaliser. About 30 minutes later, the young Brazilian picked up his second of the night – another header.
When you think of Marquinhos, you see tricks, skills and his electric pace. He showed last night that he can use his head too – not a bad trait to have for someone who’s just 5ft 9in tall.
Jeorge Bird writes in his match report that the teenager deserves a lot of praise as he ‘made a major impact‘ again for the Arsenal U21s.
That’s now three goals and an assist in two starts in the Premier League 2 for Marquinhos, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets a chance with the first team.
Just like Martinelli
Arsenal kicked off their Premier League campaign with a win over Crystal Palace last weekend. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring for the Gunners, and he is now a regular under Arteta.
That, however, wasn’t always the case. Martinelli had to wait for his chance for a long time. Arsenal fans were often critical of Arteta for not using him regularly at one point, but the Spaniard’s decision has been justified.
Marquinhos may just follow the same career path at Arsenal. Just a few weeks ago, Granit Xhaka claimed that the 19-year-old actually reminds him of Martinelli.
The Swiss international said: “He reminds me of Gabi Martinelli when he first came. Everyone was saying ‘yeah he will go to the under-23s first’ and stuff like this, but how Gabi adapted at this level was unbelievable, and I have the same feeling with Marquinhos as well.
“For his age, he is very developed physically, very fast, good left foot. Of course, he needs to adapt to this level first, this country as well, but I see a big future for this guy.”
