Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has claimed that new signing Marquinhos really reminds him of another Brazilian at the Emirates – Gabriel Martinelli.

The Gunners have had an excellent transfer window so far. Mikel Arteta has brought in Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zincheno, but the signing that kicked off Arsenal’s summer business was young Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.

Edu sealed the deal for the 19-year-old for a fee that could rise up to £3 million (Goal). The Brazilian winger is viewed as one for the future, but he could very well be a part of the present as well.

Xhaka was asked about the teenager, and he backed Marquinhos to have a similar rise to fame as another young Brazilian who came to Arsenal and set the stage on fire – Martinelli.

In an interview with Arsenal’s official Matchday Programme, Xhaka predicted a huge future for 19-year-old Marquinhos.

He said: “He reminds me of Gabi Martinelli when he first came.

“Everyone was saying ‘yeah he will go to the under-23s first’ and stuff like this, but how Gabi adapted at this level was unbelievable, and I have the same feeling with Marquinhos as well.

“For his age, he is very developed physically, very fast, good left foot. Of course, he needs to adapt to this level first, this country as well, but I see a big future for this guy.”

When Arsenal signed Marquinhos about six weeks ago, many people believed he would be sent out on loan. That may yet happen if the Gunners sign a new winger, but as things stand, he’s set to stay,

Reports revealed last month that the young Brazilian is set to be used as a rotation option in the upcoming campaign. With Arsenal in the Europa League, he could get plenty of opportunities – just like Martinelli did when he first arrived.

Xhaka is a really experienced campaigner, and he knows a fine talent when he sees one. If the Swiss international feels Marquinhos can emulate what Martinelli did back in 2019, Arsenal fans should be really excited.

Arteta’s men take on Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace on the opening day of the new Premier League season on Friday, and Marquinhos is expected to be named on the bench.
