'Make a cheeky bid': Merson thinks £97.5m CL player would actually consider joining Arsenal this summer

Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to make a ‘cheeky bid’ to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.

The Belgian left Inter Milan and returned to Stamford Bridge for a club-record £97.5 million last year (Sky Sports). Everyone expected him to make the then European champions serious contenders for the Premier League title, and after scoring in his first game – ironically, against the Gunners – that belief became stronger.

However, things just haven’t worked out for Lukaku at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel looks like he doesn’t fancy him at all, and Lukaku himself seems keen to leave the club for the second time.

Rumours about a return to Inter Milan have surfaced recently, but Merson believes Arsenal are on the same level as the Italian giants. He thinks Lukaku would consider joining the Gunners if Mikel Arteta makes a move for him this summer.

Paul Merson tells Arsenal to sign Romelu Lukaku

The Englishman wrote in his column on The Daily Star: “Arsenal should make a cheeky £60m bid for Romelu Lukaku this summer. Because if Chelsea are so desperate to let him go that they’re talking about loaning him to Inter Milan, surely they would take the money!

“I know he hasn’t scored a lot of goals this season but Lukaku is an elite goalscorer. Arsenal play great football up to the edge of the box but then it often fizzles out. Arsenal go through the lines. They want their striker on the edge of the box. It would suit him. I would be chasing Lukaku hard if I was Arsenal. I’d be trying my hardest.

“I would like to think Arsenal is a club Lukaku would consider. They’re talking about him going back to Inter Milan. But Arsenal are as big a club as Inter. Arsenal may not be in the Champions League next season, but Inter are not winning it are they? Let’s be honest.

“I think he needs to be loved. I think he needs an arm around him, and a manager who tells him how good he is all the time. Maybe Mikel Arteta is the man to do that – because he’s not getting that from Thomas Tuchel.

“The number one priority has to be signing a striker who has a proven record of scoring goals in big leagues – and Lukaku certainly has that.”

Well, Lukaku is certainly an elite goalscorer. The 29-year-old, in his supposedly terrible campaign, still managed to score 15 goals in all competitions – more than any Arsenal player last season.

With the Gunners in need of a striker who will guarantee goals, Lukaku is definitely an option worth considering. However, the chances of this happening are extremely slim, in our opinion.

The Gunners’ transfer policy is to sign young players who can be developed into world-beaters. Lukaku, who is 29 already, doesn’t quite check the box, and the fact that he earns £325,000-a-week – almost 11 times as much as Arsenal’s best player Bukayo Saka – means Arteta and Edu are unlikely to even consider him.

It will be interesting to see who Arsenal will go after this summer. The likes of Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison have been linked, and moves for both of those players are far more likely than a bid for Lukaku in the coming weeks.
