'If Kane did leave': TalkSPORT pundit tells Spurs to go and sign striker who once said he 'would die for Antonio Conte'
TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent has urged Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte to go and sign Romelu Lukaku this summer if Harry Kane leaves the club.
Spurs fans’ worries increase every time a transfer window comes around. The threat of a rival club snatching Kane away has always been there and last summer was arguably the biggest one.
It really did look like Manchester City were going to sign Kane, but Daniel Levy stood firm and made it clear that his star striker was going nowhere.
Recent reports have now revealed that City’s great rivals Manchester United want to sign Kane, and once again, Spurs fans are worried that he’ll leave. Bent, a former Tottenham striker himself, thinks he has a solution if that does happen.
Darren Bent: Tottenham should sign Romelu Lukaku if Harry Kane leaves
Bent said on talkSPORT: “If worse came to worse, and Harry Kane did leave and go elsewhere, if they can get Lukaku, you’ve seen what Conte can get out of Romelu Lukaku. Even down to his nutrition, because that was the best I’ve ever seen him look, last season and at the start of this season.
“If there was an opportunity and Kane leaves and Conte can get Lukaku, I’d go out all day to get it, all day.
“I think as someone who has plenty of Premier League experience, there’d be no one better to replace Harry Kane.
“I know they’re completely different in terms of players, Harry Kane dropping in and [is] technically a better footballer, but Lukaku would be an adequate replacement, certainly with what he did with Conte already. So, I would.”
Lukaku would ‘die’ for Antonio Conte
If there’s one manager in world football who wants his players to run through a brick wall for him, it’s Conte. Lukaku, during their time together at Inter, was prepared to do just that.
After Conte and the Belgian striker secured the Scudetto for Inter Milan last season, Lukaku said, as quoted by 90min: “I would die for Conte. I wasn’t able to join him at Chelsea (in 2017), but I’d always said I’d played for him as soon as I left Manchester United.
“Conte told me very directly: ‘If you don’t work in training you won’t play, it’s essential that you know how to play with your back to goal. It’s important to meet people who tell you the absolute truth to help you improve.”
Conte loves Lukaku and Lukaku loves Conte, which makes a reunion at Tottenham perfect. However, it really does seem unlikely that this will happen this summer.
