Liverpool’s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi seems to be approaching its climax as they aim to press ahead with a £51m deal for the midfielder.

Arne Slot believes Zubimendi would bring more control to Liverpool’s midfield, with the Reds currently lacking an out-and-out number six.

The 25-year-old featured in Real Sociedad’s pre-season friendly against Union Berlin yesterday, but the ball is firmly in his court as he decides between staying at his boyhood club and moving on to greener pastures.

Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are working to agree personal terms with Zubimendi, while Real Sociedad, on the other hand, are looking to convince him to stay.

Now, a local San Sebastian newspaper has delivered an interesting update on the transfer saga.

Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi expected to make transfer decision this week

According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Liverpool are unwilling to wait for Zubimendi, with the midfielder expected to decide his future by the end of the week.

If the midfielder makes the ‘dreaded’ decision to leave his boyhood club, Sociedad could discuss payment terms with Liverpool and potentially include a sell-on clause.

However, the transfer fee of £51m is believed to be non-negotiable owing to the presence of a release clause.

The report also states that ‘nerves are running high’ for all parties involved as Sociedad and Liverpool wait patiently for Zubimendi’s decision.

How will the Martin Zubimendi deal affect Liverpool’s finances?

If Zubimendi gives his word to Liverpool, the Reds will press ahead with the £51m deal to complete his signature.

However, payment terms could go a long way in determining what the Reds could do in the transfer market over the rest of the summer.

If Sociedad agree to discuss payment terms, Liverpool have the option of amortising the transfer fee over the course of Zubimendi’s contract at the club, which would allow them to commit a smaller fee upfront to complete the transfer.

However, if the La Liga side are unwilling to budge, the Reds will have to trigger his £51m release clause in full, which would represent a significant outlay that could affect their transfer plans.

Liverpool still want to sign Anthony Gordon after a £75m move broke down earlier this summer, but with Newcastle United well in line with the PSR guidelines, it remains to be seen if they agree to sell one of their key players at the business end of the summer transfer window.

Additionally, the Reds could be precariously placed in terms of their finances if they trigger Zubimendi’s release clause, making any potential deal for Gordon all the more difficult.
