Liverpool are searching for a new defender but they have some serious doubts in their mind when it comes to Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly.

Kelly is available on a free transfer in the summer from the Cherries. He is attracting interest from a number of clubs, with Tottenham reportedly one of the favourites to land him.

The 25-year-old could be available at a knockdown price in January and Liverpool are known to have registered an interest in signing him.

However, according to a report from the Daily Mail, Kelly might not end up at Liverpool based purely on his footballing ability.

Liverpool have doubts over Lloyd Kelly

According to the Mail’s report, Liverpool have Kelly on a long list of potential signings at the moment.

However, while he has been admired inside Anfield, there are now major doubts over whether he is good enough to make the grade at a club like Liverpool.

Kelly has had a couple of injury issues with Bournemouth since his £13m move and that might well be another factor coming into the Reds’ thinking here.

Jurgen Klopp is said to be desperate to add a new defender to his squad after the injury to Joel Matip.

A number of names have been mentioned, including Piero Hincapie and Marc Guehi.

Kelly, though, could be a cheaper option if Liverpool do decide to go that way.

Move on if you have doubts

There is absolutely no point in Liverpool signing a new defender in January if he isn’t the one they want.

Liverpool are in the title race and any signings now need to be well thought out and be able to make an impact in the second half of the season.

Kelly has ability and there’s a reason why clubs want him. But if Liverpool have doubts then they simply have to move onto other targets.
