Liverpool fans were left furious with Arne Slot following their EFL Cup exit, with the Reds manager making a strange team selection against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
Slot’s torrid run of form at Anfield continues, with Oliver Glasner’s side the latest to come out on top against Liverpool.
It backfired dramatically, and that’s led to Liverpool fans questioning their first-team coach once more.
Liverpool fans blame Arne Slot for Crystal Palace loss
Supporters simply couldn’t understand the team selection against Palace, which led to a barrage of angry tweets on X.
One fan wrote: “This loss is clearly on Arne Slot. He made bad selections; no one to blame but him. Poor loss.”
Not happy how Arne Slot is throwing the cup away so easily. We’re 2-0 down against a team who has beaten us twice, and all we have is literally under 21’s as our options.
I’ve not been a fan of Arne Slot this season, and he’s losing most of the fanbase quickly.
In the previous round, Liverpool faced Southampton, fielded a team of superstars, and breezed past Championship opposition – hence the fan confusion.
Why did Arne Slot play that side against Crystal Palace?
Slot explained his choices pre-match, suggesting that he wanted to create a “pathway” for the youngsters and also wanted to avoid further injuries.
“I think people who know this club and have followed this club for many years know that in this competition we use it for younger players,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports ahead of the game.
“We want to help create a pathway for them to play in front of 60,000 people, in front of our own fans. That is one of the reasons.
"At this club we use this competition for our younger players"
“The other reason is because we only have four or five injuries, but if I have to play the same players again… there are multiple reasons why we’ve lost so many games, and while there are no excuses, it hasn’t been helpful that almost all the time we’ve only had two days between games after playing away from home.
“If we keep playing with the same players – like, for example, I tried with Alexander Isak – then with players that missed out on pre-season, that is a big risk to pick up another injury. And we only have, at this moment in time, 15 or 16 senior players available.”
Liverpool face Aston Villa on Saturday evening in what is now surely a must-win for Slot and his side.
