Tottenham Hotspur fans have been rocked by the news that Daniel Levy is stepping down from his role as executive chairman.

In the modern football world, news very rarely breaks without some form of speculation beforehand.

Tottenham Hotspur have broken the trend, though, having announced the departure of Daniel Levy on Thursday night.

Levy’s exit is a real bombshell announcement, and one that many Spurs fans did not expect at this time.

Transfers have been the main subject of the week, with Tottenham snapping up Randal Kolo Muani on deadline day.

Fans have been excited to see new Spurs signing Xavi Simons in action for the Netherlands on Thursday night, but Levy’s exit has stolen the headlines.

Levy has been in the job for more than 20 years, overseeing incredible highs and real lows during his time at Tottenham.

Winning the Europa League, reaching the Champions League final and moving into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be seen as major success stories from Levy’s reign.

Tottenham haven’t managed to kick on since that Champions League final appearance, though, and Levy has often been criticised for not taking the club forward.

Fans have protested against Levy and ENIC, and the Spurs chairman has now decided to move on.

Tottenham supporters are still processing Levy’s exit, and one source close to the Lewis family ownership has shared some insight into the decision.

As reported by Rob Harris of Sky News, the Lewis family want ‘more wins more often’, and changes to the club’s structure are with the intention of bringing a ‘fresh approach’.

The unnamed source added that the Lewis family have full faith in Vinai Venkatesham, Thomas Frank and Peter Charrington, the club’s Non-Executive Chairman, believing that a ‘new era’ is now emerging at Tottenham Hotspur.

“Generations of the Lewis family support this special football club and they want what the fans want – more wins more often. This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach. In Vinai (Venkatesham), Thomas (Frank) and Peter Charrington, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era,” the source said.

Spurs fans will be excited by the idea of a fresh approach and a new era, but will also need to see proof of this beyond Levy’s exit.

This may be the right time for Levy to go, paving the way for a different approach under new boss Frank and with the Champions League campaign on the horizon.

Levy reflected on his exit while speaking on Tottenham Hotspur’s official website, admitting that he is ‘incredibly proud’ of his legacy at Spurs.

Levy accepted that his time at Tottenham has not always been easy, but he will continue to support Spurs from afar.

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level,” said Levy.

“More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately,” he added.
